Students, particularly young ones, often struggle with staying focused for long periods of time. As a result, regular breaks throughout the school day can help them focus.① However, the benefits of taking breaks will never stop here.

Recent research shows that your brains aren't relaxed when you take breaks. They’re hard at work processing memories and helping you make sense of what you experience.② . Short, repeated sessions of learning with breaks facilitate the memorization of new contents.

Boosting your performance and creativity

Sometimes, new creative approaches to problems may arise when you are doing different activities. So, the next time you’re stuck, try to take a break, rest and do something different.③ .

Developing social skills

Longer breaks provide opportunities for children to learn important life skills. Research shows that when children play together, they learn how to take turns, resolve conflict, and solve problems. They also learn how to manage their own emotions and behavior - fundamental skills for life. So dropping breaks is a mistake:④ , and sacrificing it for more academics is stupid.

Reducing stress

Constant worry can lead to chronic stress. Students who play less have been reported to be more likely to suffer higher levels of stress.⑤ . Therefore, taking breaks can relieve and reduce levels of stress.

Breaks provide an opportunity for creative play and allow children to practice different thinking. They benefit from the freedom to explore new ideas without fear of failure or the stress of grades, and regular exposure to new experiences can also increase their cognitive flexibility, preparing them for academic challenges.
