Dear Alice,
I’m so glad that you wrote to me. Yes… there is hope. But you need to make a lot of changes first. Dinner time can be and should be one of the most important times in your family’s day. My mom often reminded (提醒)us that she didn’t run a restaurant! So if you don’t want your kitchen to become a fast food restaurant, then I encourage you to create an atmosphere (气氛) in your kitchen where they will come quickly to the table, enjoy eating and having good conversation together as a family around the table. Here are a few tips that have worked (most of the time!) in my family…
Make sure each child has things to do. Your family is a team. And every child needs to have a part to play in preparing the dinner or setting the table. If your children feel like they’re an important part of your family “team”, then they’ll enjoy being together more.
Begin the meal with either a prayer of thanks or a word of thanks to the cook.
Insist on “please”, “thank you” and “you’re welcome” at the table.
Also, don’t let your children be excused from the table until everyone has finished eating.
“Catch” your children doing something good! Praise them when you notice them being polite.
“I’m so proud of you!” “That was such a nice way to ask your brother to pass the milk!” “Good job, Alex!”
 Yours Truly,
 Mary

3.Which of the following is a good table manner?
A.Having a meal without washing hands.
B.Talking a lot while eating with family members.

“How was your date?” my wife asked when I got home that evening. “Nice... nicer than I expected.” I said.

Sports reach people in different ways and at various stages. For me, however, sports have always been a part of my life, a great part where I always felt most comfortable. Even when I was a child, I found my time enjoyable jumping from tree to tree in the mountains, playing golf with my dad, and of course, playing basketball.
It’s hard to explain how important sports were to me when I grew up. Life is about how a person acts around people, first impressions, appearances, etc. You often hear people say they act differently around some people or they’re not as comfortable in certain situations. I can honestly say I’m completely at home when I’m playing sports. It’s easy to feel relaxed in a situation when you are good at it.
Sports were something that came natural to me and helped me to get a lot of confidence. The importance of sports to me, however, wasn’t the confidence I’ve gained (获得) but the drive that it continues to give me. Sports push me to my limit, create goals for me to achieve, and produce a love of something so pure and simple.
Then there’s the competition. I love to compete. I love to win. I love to dive for a loose ball, take the last second shot, etc. As an athlete (运动员), you live for those things. It may only be one shining moment, but it’s a moment you’ll never forget. That’s what makes sports great whether you’re a man or a woman.
1.What does the author mean by“I’m completely at home when I’m playing sports?”
A.It is only at home that I can play sports.
B.I prefer playing sports at home.
C.I feel very comfortable when I am playing sports.
D.I am relaxed when playing sports at home.
2.Which of the following is NOT the reason why sports are important to the author?
A.Sports produce something pure for him to love.
B.Sports helped him to be self-confident.
C.Sports push him to do the best he can do.
D.Sports create goals for him to achieve
3.According to the author, what do sports mean to athletes?
A.Earning much money.
B.Getting respect from people.
C.Getting honor for the country.
D.Competition and winning.
4.What is the best title of this passage?
A.Sports Have
B.een Part of My Life 5 B. Sports Are Important to Everyone
C.Sports Are for Competition Only
D.Sports Have Made Life More Meaningful

Secret codes (密码) keep messages private. Banks, companies, and government agencies use secret codes in doing business, especially when information is sent by computer.
People have used secret codes for thousands of years. ①Code breaking never lags (落后) far behind code making. The science of creating and reading coded messages is called cryptography.
There are three main types of cryptography. ②For example, the first letters of “My elephant eats too many eels” Spell out the hidden message “Meet me.”
③You might represent each letter with a number, For example, Let’s number the letters of the alphabet, in order, from 1 to 26. If we substitute a number for each letter, the message “Meet me” would read “13520135”.
A code uses symbols to replace words, phrases, or sentences. To read the message of a real code, you must have a code book. ④For example “bridge“ might stand for “meet” and “out” might stand for “me” .The message “bridge out” would actually mean “Meet me”. ⑤However, it is also hard to keep a code book secret for long. So codes must be changed frequently.
A. It is very hard to break a code without the code book.
B. In any language, some letters are used more than others.
C. Only people who know the keyword can read the message.
D. As long as there have been codes, people have tried to break them.
E. You can hide a message by having the first letters of each word spell it out.
F. With a code book, you might write down words that would stand for other words.
G. Another way to hide a message is to use symbols to stand for specific letters of the alphabet.
